Stala Puranam Of Sri Mahabaleshwara Swamy Temple:

Ravana’s mother who is a devotee of shiva worshipped shiva linga for the prosperity of their kingdom. The lord Indra felt jealous about her dedication towards shiva stoled the statue and threw it in the sea. Then Ravana’s mother was disappointed that her worship was interrupted. Ravana promised her mother that he will get the Atma linga. He worshipped lord shiva on the Himalayas and finally, he chopped his head for lord shiva then shiva was impressed by his devotion and gave aathmalinga to him on one condition that the aathamalinga should not be placed down from hands if that happens the aathamalinga will be rooted at that place.

Ravana accepted for this condition and moved, in the evening as he has to do his rituals he called a cowboy to hold the aathamalinga and not to keep it on the ground until he returned back from the bath the boy accepted to hold the linga but he will keep it down if Ravana is not returned by calling Ravana thrice. Lord Ganesh tricked Ravana in the form of the cowboy, cowboy called Ravana for three times and he can’t return so that he kept the aathalinga down and when Ravana tried to lift the aathmalinga it is struck and became gigantic so, Ravana named it as “Mahabaleshwar”. The name Gokarna is derived as that the cowboy dropped the aathamalinga then Ravana chased the boy and his cows suddenly all of them disappeared except one cow so he chased the cow and catches it’s ear except the ear the rest went to the ground.
